Considering Fertility Treatment? How Do You Decide Whether to Wait?
Considering Fertility Treatment? How Do You Decide Whether to Wait?

When you’re considering fertility treatment, one of the hardest questions can be surprisingly simple: “Do we start now, or should we wait?”

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. For some people, starting fertility treatment right away feels like the right next step. For others, taking some time to think, plan, or simply understand their options makes more sense.

But here’s something worth remembering, you don’t have to decide whether to start treatment before you can learn what your options are. A fertility consultation can simply be a first step toward getting information and that information can help you decide whether waiting is right for you.

A fertility consultation is about information, not commitment

It’s easy to think of a fertility consultation as the moment when you officially “start treatment.” But a first appointment doesn’t have to mean that. Think of it as an opportunity to get a clearer picture of where you are today and what your options might look like if and when you’re ready to move forward.

During your first appointment, your fertility care team can help you understand:

  • Your fertility health: Your doctor can review your medical and reproductive history and recommend appropriate testing or evaluation.
  • Your potential treatment plan: Depending on your individual circumstances, you may learn which fertility treatment options could make sense for you.
  • Your timeline: Some treatments take several weeks or months, while others may involve a longer process. Understanding the timeline can help you plan.
  • Your potential costs: You can get a better idea of what different treatment options may cost.
  • Insurance coverage: Understanding what your insurance may cover, and what it may not cover, can help you plan financially.
  • Your next steps: You can leave with a clearer understanding of what you know, what you don’t know yet, and what decisions may need to be made.

You don’t have to have all the answers when you walk in. That’s what the consultation is for!

How do you know if it’s okay to wait?

Sometimes, waiting is a perfectly reasonable choice. But “waiting” doesn’t have to mean putting your fertility completely on hold without knowing what’s happening. A fertility evaluation can give you information that helps you make a more informed decision about whether waiting is reasonable for you.

Your doctor may consider factors such as your age, reproductive history, test results, ovarian reserve, sperm health, menstrual history, previous pregnancies or fertility treatments, and other individual factors.

The goal isn’t necessarily to tell you, “You need to start treatment now.” Instead, it’s to help answer a more useful question: “Given what we know about my fertility today, what does waiting mean for me?”

For one person, waiting six months may be a perfectly reasonable option. For another, certain test results or circumstances may make it worth considering treatment sooner. The important thing is having enough information to make that decision intentionally.

Waiting can be a decision. So can starting.

There can be a tremendous amount of mental and emotional weight around fertility decisions. You may be thinking about your career, finances, relationship, family plans, or whether you’re emotionally ready to take on treatment. You may feel overwhelmed by the number of options or hesitant to take the first step because you’re worried that making an appointment means you’re committing to something bigger. It doesn’t have to.

Starting with a fertility consultation is not the same as starting treatment.

Sometimes the most helpful first step is simply finding out what your options are and once you have that information, you may decide to wait. You may decide to start treatment. Or you may decide you need more time and another conversation before making a decision. All of those are valid outcomes of a consultation.

What if you have FSA money left?

There’s another practical consideration worth keeping in mind, especially as the end of the year approaches: your Flexible Spending Account (FSA).

If you have money remaining in your FSA, you may have heard the phrase “use it or lose it.” Depending on your employer’s plan, unused FSA funds may be forfeited at the end of the plan year, although some plans offer a grace period or allow a limited amount to carry over. That makes it worth checking your specific FSA rules before the end of the year.

If fertility care is an eligible expense under your plan, using FSA funds toward a fertility consultation may be one way to put money you’ve already set aside for healthcare to good use. It’s also important to know that using your FSA funds doesn’t mean you have to decide to pursue treatment.

You can use a consultation to gather information about your fertility, potential treatment options, costs, insurance coverage, and timeline and then take that information with you as you decide what’s right for you.

Instead of asking yourself: “Am I ready to do fertility treatment?” Try starting with: “Would it be helpful to understand my fertility and my options?”

If the answer is yes, a consultation may be a worthwhile first step.

FSA rules vary by plan. Check with your FSA administrator or employer to confirm eligibility, deadlines, carryover provisions, and whether a particular fertility service qualifies as an eligible expense.

You don’t have to make every decision today

Fertility treatment is a big decision. But getting information doesn’t have to be. At Reach, we understand that fertility decisions are personal. A consultation is an opportunity to ask questions, understand your options, and make a plan that fits your life.

At Reach, your consultation is good for a full calendar year, giving you time to process what you’ve learned and decide what comes next. You can take the information home, talk it over with your partner or support system, consider your finances and timing, and come back to the decision when you’re ready.

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t deciding what to do, it’s deciding when you have enough information to make the decision. You don’t have to be ready for treatment to be ready for answers.
